Department of Statistics, Mathematics and Computer Studies
Background Information
The Department of Mathematics/Computer Studies was established in 1994. In November 1999, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Studies was expanded to include Statistics and hence its current name Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Studies.
Currently, the department provides services to the Schools of Engineering and Business and Management Studies in the areas of Applied Mathematics and Computer Studies. The Department is running a one and half (11/2) year top up programme in Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech) degree in Statistics. The B-Tech, programme commenced in 2018/2019 academic year after obtaining accreditation for the National Accreditation Board (NAB). The Department had twelve (12) Lecturers, Principal Administrative Assistant, one NABCO Personnel and three (3) National Service Persons. The Department is headed by Mr. Elisha D’Archimedes Armah.
Vision, Mission
The vision of the department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Studies is to become a center of excellence that provides practical training to students and equip them with knowledge and skills needed to perform professional duties as statisticians and become functional members of the society in relations to census, Survey, Quality Control and other Statistical Project and Activities.
Objectives
In line with stated vision of the Institutions, the objectives of the Department is to train students who intend to qualified as Statisticians in the Industries. At end the programme, students would have acquired skills to; solve problems in Science, Industry, Commerce and Business; Teach in the Basic and Secondary Schools; and contribute to the countries developmental needs in Research Institutions and industry.
The programme provides instruction in statistical theory and methods, and their application to the collection, collation, preparation, analysis and dissemination of information. It is therefore designed to provide practical training and to enhance the knowledge and skills of a statistician. In addition, the course seeks to meet the needs of those who have developed interest in the programme and are desirous of acquiring further knowledge in the field.
Therefore, the objectives of the programme is as follows:
- To train students who can advance the frontier of knowledge by creating new concepts in statistics
- To train students who can apply their skills in solving problems in science industry, commerce and business
- To provide adequate training for teachers in second cycle institutions.
- To produce graduate who can contribute to the country’s development needs in research institution, Industry and commerce.
