Introduction
The Department of Fashion Design and Textiles Studies is one of the Department under the School of Arts. The Department runs three types of programmes:
- Bachelor of Technology in Fashion Design and Textile Technology
- Higher National Diploma in Fashion and Textile Studies
- Non-tertiary Programme in Diploma Fashion Design.
The Bachelor of Technology in Fashion Design and Textile Technology is a four-year and 18 months Top-Up degree programme respectively, the Higher National Diploma in Fashion and Textile Studies is a three-year programme while the Diploma Fashion Design is a two-year programme. The HND programme is run on regular and on weekends. The 18 months Top-Up degree programme is also run only on weekends.
Students are trained to develop creative skills in fashion design, textile design, fashion accessories and beauty culture. Students are also taken through fashion illustration to improve their technical presentation and good working practices. For students to acquire requisite skills in marketing and standard quality, they are trained in Apparel Merchandising and Quality Control to meet international standards and promote sales of fashion products. At the end of each programme, graduates organize final exhibition of’ collection and a grand fashion show to crown the skills acquired.
Vision
To shape young minds with design thinking, instill passion and flare for designing, production and help aspiring students to become successful designers, entrepreneurs and industry ready professionals.
Objectives
The objectives of the programmes are to facilitate well trained career-oriented manpower equipped with modern technologies, entrepreneurial and managerial skills for self-employment in the fashion industry and related sectors.
- To develop students’ aesthetic, intellectual and technological abilities through programs that integrates theory and practice.
- To promote students’ growth and self-development through industrial attachments, and opportunities for experiential learning.
- To develop competent technical professionals for meeting the demands of the Ghanaian and International Fashion Industry.
- Equip students with skills, entrepreneurial knowledge and confidence to set up their own fashion production and merchandizing centres after graduation.
- Provide competency-based skill training to enable them to participate in employment opportunities in the evolving global marketplace.
- Equip students with skills in planning, marketing and product development in fashion and Textile industries.
