Department Of Computer Science And Technology

Overview of the Department

The Department of Computer Science and Technology (CST) was formally part of the then Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Studies department. However, through the academic board, a request to split the Mathematics Statistics and Computer Studies (MSCS) department was made to the University’s governing council. Consequently, on Friday, March 26th, 2021, the university council discussed and approved the splitting of the MSCS as follows:

  1. Department of Mathematics and Statistics (MS)
  2. Department of Computer Science and Technology (CST)

Therefore, the CST Department officially started on the 26th of March 2021 as a standalone department with the main aim of teaching and researching computer technologies.

The Vision

To be a Global centre of excellence in ICT education, research, and innovation, driving transformative changes in a connected world by fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and inclusivity, and producing forward-thinking computer scientists and technologists capable of addressing digital challenges.

The Mission

Enhancing technology for a green future: we are committed to advancing computer science research, education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and technologists capable of addressing challenges.

Nurturing Lifelong Learners: to foster a community of lifelong learners within the realm of ICT, offering comprehensive and dynamic educational programmes that cultivate intellectual curiosity, adaptability, and a deep appreciation for continual growth in the ever-evolving world of technology.

Enabling Social Impact through Technology: to produce graduates who leverage their technical expertise to create innovative solutions that positively impact individuals, communities, and the world at large, addressing pressing social issues and promoting equitable opportunities for all.

Cultivating Ethical technologists: we believe that technology should be developed and used responsibly. Our mission is to inculcate in our students a strong ethical foundation, promoting integrity, fairness, and social responsibility in all aspects of computer science and technology.

Bridging Academia and Industry: to bridge the gap between academia and industry, ensuring that our graduates are well-prepared for real-world challenges by forging strong partnerships with industry.

Academic Programmes

The fundamental role and importance of ICT in national development leaves no one in doubts as it provides the catalyst for change in the development of policies, programmes and projects. Cloud computing and virtualization are viewed as having the potential to significantly bolster economic growth through the provision of cost savings and efficiencies, including the cost of management of data and security.

The Department has introduced two ICT programmes: Btech ICT (virtualization and cloud computing Technologies) and Diploma in ICT.

The Btech programme equips learners with the skills to install and configure virtualization software, manage virtual networking and storage, deploy, manage, and migrate virtual machines, manage user access to the virtual machine infrastructure, monitor resource usage, increase scalability, apply patches, and manage higher availability and data protection. This programme provides the avenue for training the much-needed higher-level manpower in greater quantity and quality for the cloud industry for Ghana and elsewhere.

The Diploma in ICT programme aims to train students in the fundamentals of ICT that can propel them for their future ICT endeavours.
