You are welcome to the Department of Environmental Management Technology (EMT), Cape Coast Technical University. EMT is one of the two departments in the School of Built and Natural Environment. Here, our passion is to look for innovative and practical solutions to solving contemporary environmental problems. Be it a student, a faculty member, or a collaborator, we have a collective responsibility to promote sustainability, foster environmental stewardship, and prepare the next generation of leaders to tackle the pressing environmental challenges of our time. Our mission is to educate and stimulate a new generation of environmental leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators to develop and implement sustainable environmental solutions. The EMT Department’s vision is to become a centre of excellence for environmental management issues in the country by developing highly skilled and innovative environmental professionals and industrial partnerships that enhance research and cultivate a culture of sustainability. The Department offers an undergraduate programme designed to equip students with the prerequisite knowledge and skills to handle fundamental environmental challenges. It seeks to introduce a graduate programme in the near future to equip environmental management practitioners with the needed knowledge and skills to deal with the varied environmental issues of our day. EMT looks forward to partnerships worldwide to help it fulfil its mandate of contributing to building a sustainable and healthy environment that supports life. The department’s vision can only be realised through genuine collaborations with the government, individuals, agencies, and institutions that share the burden of environmental sustainability. Background Information

Over the years, environmental management and associated technologies have evolved and become essential for overcoming the environmental crisis and ensuring sustainable development.

The Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Management Technology is designed to provide high-quality training in practical and theoretical environmental management technology. This interdisciplinary degree integrates elements of science, management, technology, and social science to help students understand the environmental systems in which we live and work and how we can improve our actions as inhabitants. The programme is made up of 40% assessment and 60% examination.

The vision of the Environmental Management Technology Department  is to:

Aim and Objectives

The programme seeks to equip students to understand and manage local, national and international environmental problems sustainably and develop their analytical, design and systems thinking skills, making them competitive in the job market.

The specific objectives of the programme are to help students:

  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of environmental science, ecology, and the interrelationships between human activities and the natural environment.
  2. Gain a deep knowledge of environmental technologies, including renewable energy, waste management, water treatment, and pollution control, to design and implement sustainable solutions.
  3. Learn how to assess and analyse environmental issues and challenges.
  4. Acquire environmental monitoring, data analysis, and modelling skills to assess environmental impacts and develop adequate environmental protection and conservation strategies.
  5. Explore the legal and policy frameworks related to environmental regulations and international agreements, understanding the role of governance in environmental management.
  6. Cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to address complex environmental issues through research, innovation, and technological advancements.
  7. Communicate and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, industries, communities, and non-governmental organisations.
  8. Emphasise sustainable practices and encourage students to adopt a holistic approach to environmental management, considering other dimensions of influence.
