PROFILE OF THE PRO VICE CHANCELLOR
Professor Lawrence Atepor
Ag. Pro Vice-Chancellor
Prof. Lawrence Atepor is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering (Dynamics and Renewable Energy Technologies) and currently, the Dean of the School of Engineering and the Acting Pro Vice Chancellor at the Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU). From September 2013 to July 2022, he was an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at CCTU.
Prof. Atepor is an interdisciplinary engineer, scientist and researcher with deep interest in vibration control of structures and green and renewable energy development. His professional expertise includes Machine Dynamics-Vibration Analysis and Control of Vibration in Rotating Machines and Vehicles using Smart Materials; Linear and Nonlinear Dynamics of Mechanical Structures, Chaos and Applied Mechanics; Mechatronics/Automobile Control; Green and Renewable Energy Technologies; Safety Management; Porous Media Flow; Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics; and Vehicular Exhaust Emissions and their Effect on the Environment.
He has extensive experience in teaching, research and collaboration with partners in both developed (Russia, USA, UK, China, Finland, Germany) and developing countries (Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, Botswana, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania). He has served as consultant to some local companies including Newmont Goldfields Ghana Ltd, Goldfields Ghana Ltd, Tarkwa and Libber (Machines) Ghana Ltd, Tarkwa.
He holds MSc Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tashkent Institute of Engineers of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanisation, Tashkent in the then Soviet Union (U.S.S.R) and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Glasgow, Scotland in the United Kingdom since 2005. In addition, he holds a certificate in Teaching Methodology and Assessment Techniques from University of Education, Winneba and two (2) certificates in University Governance from Northeast Normal University, Changchun, Jilin Province in China.
Prof. Atepor has received several prestigious Scholarships including the Soviet Government Scholarship (1985-1992), GetFund Scholarship (2005-2009). He is the first individual from Sub-Saharan Africa to be awarded the outstanding researcher and best paper presentation at a conference organised by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Glasgow in 2007.
He has garnered about 30 years of industrial and teaching experience with 27 of the years at the tertiary level. He is an accomplished educationist and administrator. He took up an appointment with the then Cape Coast Polytechnic as a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1997 and from 1998 to 2005, he was the chief examinations invigilator of the then Polytechnic, Head, Automobile Engineering Section, Head, Mechanical Engineering Department and Dean, School of Engineering.
In 2012, Professor Lawrence Atepor became the first and only teaching staff of the then Cape Coast Polytechnic to be appointed the Rector of the institution, a position he held until 2016, and he was re-appointed, and this time as the first Vice Chancellor of the Cape Coast Technical University.
