3RD GHATUSA GAMES OFFICIALLY OPENS AT THE ROBERT MENSAH SPORTS STADIUM, CAPE COAST


The 3rd edition of the Ghana Technical University Sports Association (GHATUSA) Games kicked off on Friday, April 5, 2025.

On Monday, April 7, 2025, the 2025 edition of the Technical University Games was officially launched at the iconic Robert Mensah Sports Stadium in Cape Coast.

The Games, hosted by Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU), had the inspiring theme “Embracing Sports for National Development: the Role of the Technical University.” This significant event gathered over 1,000 student-athletes, 400 officials, and more than 10,000 spectators from across the country, creating an exciting atmosphere for competition and friendship for ten days.

Prof. Kwaku Adutwum Ayim Boakye, the host Vice-Chancellor, in his welcome address, expressed excitement about the 2025 GHATUSA games and called on all officials, sportsmen/women, guests, and spectators to demonstrate the virtues of sportsmanship to safeguard the noble ideals of organising such games.

The Chairman of Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities, Ghana (VCTU-G), Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, in his remarks, commended the government’s commitment to infrastructure development on university campuses across the country. Yet he requested a boost in sports infrastructure and student-bed accommodation within the Technical Universities. He reiterated that well-equipped sporting facilities, with modern student hostels, will enhance the university experience and provide an enabling environment for student-athletes to train and excel.

 

The special guest of honour, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, in his address, commended the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Ghana Technical University Sports Association (GHATUSA) for their unrelenting commitment and excellence in nurturing sports talents since the inception of the GHATUSA Games.

He stressed on the importance of the Games, noting that it serves as a platform for talent identification and preparation, thereby producing sportsmen and women to represent Ghana at prestigious international events such as the African Games, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympic Games.

Hon. Adams intimated the establishment of the School Sports Agency to provide the necessary support for organizing major school sports events and also systematically nurture, manage, and monitor young talents from the basic level to the tertiary level as one of the avenues of the Mahama–led government to comprehensively reset the sports ecosystem.

The event featured the lighting of the 2025 GHATUSA Games torch to signify the official opening of the sporting event, a match pass by the ten (10) participating technical universities, and a kick-off football match between Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU) and Ho Technical University (HTU). The full-time score was 2-2 for both teams. However, in a penalty shootout, HTU secured a thrilling 4-3 victory against the host, CCTU.

Present at the event were the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, the Ag. Regional Coordinating Director, Mr. Bless Darkey (a representative of the Central Regional Minister) Vice-Chancellors Technical Universities – Ghana (VCTU-G) Host Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Kwaku Adutwum Ayim Boakye, Registrars of Technical Universities, Finance Directors of Technical Universities, GHATUSA Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Chiefs and residents of Oguaa Traditional Area, student-athletes, Staff of the National Sports Authority – Cape Coast, Nana Kojo Mamphey I, (Chairman /Chief Strategist of Mamdev Ghana Ltd and the media.
