13th, March 2026

The Cape Coast Technical University’s Gender Desk, on 9th March, 2026, commemorated the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD) with a call to offer intentional solutions to gender issues.

The event, which was the maiden edition, was held under the theme “Give to Gain”. It provided a platform for academic and non-academic staff, students and other members of the community to deliberate on strategies to advance the empowerment of women and girls across the University campus.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kwaku Adutwum Ayim Boakye, in his remarks, highlighted the importance of continuous collaboration among Schools, Departments, Directorates, Sections and Units within the University to accelerate progress towards gender equality. He reaffirmed Management’s commitment to advancing gender-responsive policies that promoted the rights and welfare of women in the University.

The Gender Desk Coordinator, Dr. Mrs. Magdalene Bartrop-Sackey, in her remarks, thanked Management and staff for their support and noted that achieving gender equality required collective responsibility and thoughtful action across all sectors of society and hence all members should continue to support the Gender Desk. “This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” reminds us that meaningful progress is built on intentional contribution. Every time you give your time, expertise, compassion, innovation, and courage, our university gains excellence”, Dr. Mrs. Bartrop-Sackey noted.

Delivering the keynote address, the Guest Speaker, Prof. Akua Opokua Britwum, the First Female Chairperson of the National Media Commission and a Gender Activist, underscored the importance of sustained intentional efforts to bridge gender gaps, especially in technical education, economic empowerment, health, political, protection from violence and participation.

She called on stakeholders to champion gender equality, not only as a women’s issue but as a societal development priority essential for building a more just and inclusive nation.

Prof. Akua Opokua Britwum commended Management and the Gender Desk for championing gender equality and reaffirmed her continued support for initiatives aimed at empowering women and girls within the University community.

The event featured solidarity messages from union groups, presentation of certificate of recognition to some persons in the University community and a group photograph.
