CCTU Unveils State-of-the-Art FAB Lab and Design Space to Mark 40th Anniversary
Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU) has commissioned a fully equipped Engineering Design and Innovation Centre (EDIC) FAB Lab and Design Space, bringing a partnership promise to life as the Institution marks four decades of technical education in Ghana.

The Centre, jointly commissioned on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, by the Chairman of the CCTU Governing Council, Prof. Isaac Kwame Dontwi, and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kwaku Adutwum Ayim Boakye, houses cutting-edge 3D printers, laser engraving equipment, and fabrication tools donated by the G-Hub Foundation.
The unveiling began with a commemorative plaque presentation, followed by a demonstration of the centre’s capabilities and student projects by Dr. Kwame Anane-Fenin, the Director of EDIC. These included an automated handwashing system developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, a briquette plant for a furniture company, and a noise-free food trolley under contract with Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

"Before we roll out any project, we do the engineering design itself and model it," Dr. Anane-Fenin explained, walking guests through 3D animations and prototypes displayed at the newly furnished space. “These are state-of-the-art 3D printers. The expensive one can do much more complicated work, so we are hoping to do a lot of prototypes", he added.

Current projects include an Agricultural Seed Planter developed with the University of Cape Coast and the Regional Agriculture Department, expected for testing by the end of 2026, and an old bus being converted into a solar-powered mobile classroom for heritage site teaching”, Dr. Anane-Fenin noted.
Prof. Kwame Dontwi, Chairman of the CCTU Governing Council, commended the initiative as emblematic of Ghana's development agenda. "When we say resetting Ghana, there's always the need to start from somewhere," he said. "The next time we visit in a few months, we want to see change and improvement, better innovations, and stable systems in place."

The Centre’s early successes, including the 2021 briquette plant and hospital trolley projects, suggest that the timeline may be realistic, demonstrating the capacity to solve real industrial and healthcare challenges through 3D modelling and fabrication.
As CCTU marks Its 40th Anniversary, the launch of the Engineering Design and Innovation Centre (EDIC) represents a tangible step toward the University's renewable energy focus and Its ambition to shape Ghana's technological landscape through homegrown innovation rather than imported solutions.
