HOTEL, CATERING AND INSTITUTIONAL MANAGEMENT

The Department of Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management trains students to acquire knowledge and skills for managerial and supervisory roles in the hospitality industry. Currently, the Department runs HND programmes in Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management.

The Department’s philosophy include: to provide a high quality vocational education, which is intellectually rigorous and up-to-date, relevant to the needs of future middle-level manpower professionals in the service sector; to become the leading trainer of professionals in contemporary Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management training in the country; to train students to boost the hospitality industry in the country.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Students who successfully complete the programme are employed as Hospitality Supervisors, Domestic Bursars, Hotel Managers, Chefs, Diet Cooks, Teachers in the Technical/Vocational Institutes or be Self Employed.

FUTURE PLANS

The Department is preparing to mount a programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Technology in Hospitality and Catering Management. The Department intends to offer, in the near future, a distance leaing programme in Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management to give workers the opportunity to further studies at their own convenience.

The Department in collaboration with USA Rice in the foreseeable future will organize refresher training courses for food vendors, fast food joint operators and local eateries operators (chop bars) within the catchment area. Specifically, the programme aims to develop an in-depth understanding of current trends in food management. It will provide sound management education while developing their skills to ensure the safety, acceptability and nutritional adequacy of food that they provide. The Department intends to produce fruit juices and start a bakery.

CAFETERIA AND TRAINING RESTAURANT

The Cafeteria and Training Restaurant provide practical training for Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management students and sumptuous meals (mainly lunch) for the University Community. These facilities are under the supervision of the Head of HCIM Department.
